Data privacy & security
March 10, 2022
In May 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became effective. The GDPR aims to protect the rights of privacy of every EU resident, giving them a greater say as to how their data is used. It also places responsibilities on every person, business or organisation that collects personal data, to ensure that this data is managed appropriately and is held securely.
GDPR is important to tutors because it has regulations and implications on how tutors, as professionals, handle: the information they receive about a student and his / her family, the personal information they collect about a student and his / her family, and the communication they have with a student or his / her family.
Within GDPR you can be a Data Controller, a Data Processor, or both. Most tutors would classify themselves as a Data Controller. This is because tutors decide what data or information they want to collect about a student, they have a clear purpose for the collection of this information, and they themselves collect it and store it.
